Mike Duggan and Coleman A. Young II

During last week's mayoral debate, challenger, state Sen. Coleman A. Young II told voters: "It's time to take back the motherland for the people."
That's also the theme of an Election Eve rally.
Critcs accuse him of being racially divisive, suggesting that black Detroiters needed to reclaim the city and oust Mayor Mike Duggan.
But campaign manager Adolph Mongo, in a press release, insists that "motherland" is more inclusive:
It was about empowering the people across the city who feel neglected, who feel ignored, whose needs and concerns should be heard by our leadership class.
That's what he meant by "the motherland:" the people who live here and have critical issues that need to be addressed. Senator Young hears them.
Mongo's remarks came in a press release promoting the free Take Back the Motherland rally from 6- 8 p.m. Mo nday at Solomon's Temple Banquet Hall, 2426 E. 7 Mile.
