U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman has decided to wait for the U.S. Supreme Court for some direction before he moves forward.

A lesbian couple appeared a briefly at a hearing on Thursday in an attempt to overturn Michigan's ban on gay marriage so they can adopt one anothers children. They are suing the state.

Michigan bans gay couples from adopting each others children, so the judge had suggested they go further and challenge the gay marriage ban.

But on Thursday Friedman said it was best to wait to see how the Supreme Court rules on two similar federal cases, possibly in June, before he rules.

"I'll be watching those cases close," Friedman said, according to the Detroit News.  "Hopefully, the Supreme Court will give us some direction."

The case involves April DeBoer, 41, and her partner  Jayne Rowse, 48,  who live in Hazel Park.
