Michigan gets good news just three days into 2017.
Ford Motor Co. is canceling plans for a $1.6-billion plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and will invest $700 million at its Flat Rock Assembly Plant to create 700 new jobs there, reports Melissa Burden of The Detroit News.
“Ford is a global automaker, but our home is here in the U.S.,” CEO Mark Fields tells workers and journalists in Flat Rock.
The News reports:
Flat Rock will get a new manufacturing innovation center, and the factory will be capable of producing electrified and autonomous vehicles, plus the Mustang and Lincoln Continental. An all-electric SUV with an estimated range of 300 miles will be built at the plant, in addition to another vehicle.
The cars are among 13 new global electrified vehicles to be introduced in the next five years, including an F-150 Hybrid, Mustang Hybrid and Transit Custom plug-in hybrid, the company said Tuesday.

Ford still intends to expand manufacturing in Mexico, announcing at the same time that the next-generation Ford Focus will be built at an existing facility there to save on costs.
