Not so long ago we paid well over $3 a gallon for gas. Then prices dropped far below $3, and they've seemed to stay that way.

Lately, they're creeping up again. --up an average of 8.6 cents per gallon in the past week around Metro Detroit, WXYZ reports.

The average for unleaded is $2.61 a gallon, according to GasBuddy -- nearly 20 cents higher than the national average, which rose just a cent to $2.43.

Compared to a year ago, prices in Metro Detroit are up an average of 22.6 cents. They're 4.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.

The Great Lakes has seen a flurry of gas price increases over the last week as a result of several refinery issues,  pulling the national average up nearly single-handedly, says Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

Here's a sampling of earlier average prices locally:

  • $2.39 in 2016
  • $1.88 in 2015
  • $2.07 in 2014
  • $3.19 in 2013
  • $3.24 in 2012.
