A Hazel Park gay couple is taking on the state of Michigan and Attorney General Bill Schuette in the battle against same-sex marriage.
The Free Press reports that April DeBoer and her partner Jayne Rowse say they're it doing to protect their kids.
The two have amended their lawsuit in federal court in Detroit that originally challenged the state's ban on gay couples adopting children as a couple. Now they've changed it so that they're challenging Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage.
The Freep writes:
The couple said they worry that, if something should happen to one of them, their children could lose health insurance and other benefits open to children of married couples.
Their lawyer Dana Nessel said that the State of Michigan certified DeBoer and Rowse to become foster parents together but won't allow them to both adopt. Michigan law allows only single people or married couples to adopt.
Together, DeBoer and Rowse have raised 3 1/2-year-old Nolan and 2 1/2-year-old Ryanne, who were abandoned at birth, and 2 1/2-year-old Jacob since he was 4 months old.
