In a city that lacks a comprehensive transportation system, and that operates a bus service that is woefully inadequate, here's some welcome news.

The Detroit Bus Co. will begin operating today, thanks to the owner,  Ferndale entrepreneur Andy Didorosi, 25,  the Detroit News reports.

The News reports that the bus line will charge $5 to ride all day. The service will include a loop with stops at Greektown, Downtown, Corktown, Mexicantown, Woodbridge, Midtown and Eastern Market.

The owner Didorosi told the paper the service will run Friday from 6 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., Saturday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The service will also run two hours before and two hours after Tigers games. Eventually, the service will extend out into the burbs. It will also offer rides for free to people who have no reliable way to get to work.

The website promotes the service with slogans that include: "We're a homegrown company fighting for a connected Detroit. We're a transit revolution. We're your ride home."" -- A.L.
