General Motors has agreed to pay a $35 million fine for delaying the recall of 2.6 million older cars for faulty ignition switches, the Detroit News reports.

The paper reports that GM has reached an agreement with the  National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

An announcement on the agreement is expected to come today.

The maximum fine was $35 million fine under law. The faulty ignition switches are linked to 13 deaths and 32 crashes.

The deal also calls for GM to make significant changes in the area of safety issues, the paper reported.
