A GoFundMe campaign has so far raised more than $17,600 for Uber driver Modou Diagne, a Senegal native who died last weekend after he was shot twice and hit a tree on Detroit's west side.
The fund, with a $30,000 goal, posts:
We are seeking your support for Modou Diagne who was 41 years old and was a very active member of our Detroit community. He is survived by 2 boys, 1 girl and his wife.
Modou Diagne, who was an Uber driver, was murdered on Saturday morning March 19th, 2016. Please donate to support his family and the funerals costs. May God reward your effort!
One of the more than 580 donors, Sulaiman Bah, posts early Thursday: "It could have been my dad. I am very sorry for the loss."
A suspect is arrested, reports Nima Shaffe of WXYZ.
Diagne was found inside his car in the 5500 block of Pacific Avenue around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
Uber operators generally carry little or no money. Fares are automatically charged to a credit card through the Uber app and customers are told they don't have to tip. But some customers do tip and drivers likely carry personal money.
A company statement says:
“We were greatly saddened this week to learn of the tragic death of one of our driver-partners. His wife, children and family are in our prayers and hearts during this unimaginably difficult time. We’ve been in contact with local police to offer our assistance as they work to bring the perpetrator to justice.”
