When we think about gun problems,  we don't often think about our gentler neighbors across the river in Windsor.

But yes, they do have problems with gun and drugs.

The Windsor Star reports that Windsor Police say they seized seized 389 guns in 2015, compared to 316 firearms in 2014 and 271 in 2013.

The number of drug charges also jumped significantly.

The paper reports that police filed 705 criminal drug charges in 2015, up 68 per cent increase from 419 in 2014.

“That is an enforcement-driven stat,” said Deputy Chief Vince Power. “We have designated significant resources to targeting drugs in our community. We’ve had lots of co-operation from the community with respect to providing police information. So when you have enforcement-driven stuff, generally speaking you’re to see an increase.”

Windsor, which has a population of about 210,000, recorded the highest number of homicides in 2015 in Windsor in four years: There were four, one of which was gun related.

In Detroit, which has a population of about 700,000, there were 295 homicides recorded last year.

In 2005 almost 3% of households in Canada possessed handguns, compared to 18%  in the U.S.
