Downtown Detroit erupted in a tizzy last night as thousands of spectators at the fireworks saw fighting heard gunshots heard fireworks heard unidentified loud scary noises.

The big bangs -- which were gunshots according to Twitter and Reddit, and fireworks, according to police -- sent people running en masse and left most everyone confused as to what was going on.

The rumors and reports form the basis of Aaron Foley's report on Jalopnik Detroit that analyzes media response and finds it problematical, especially that of the electronic media.

Was it a legitimate scare or group think gone slightly awry? Here's some cell phone video taken from the event. You be the judge.
