Ladies (yeah?)
Ladies,
The Internet has decided we're badass. I'm not talking about just Madonna and Aretha here. Everyday women who live their day-to-day in Detroit are getting a shout in a new video called "A Girl's Guide To Detroit," produced by local creative team 4exit4.
"Detroit is a place that attracts a certain type of individual. Someone that's both tough and independent. That's especially true for the women who have chosen to stake their claim in one of the nation's most complicated cities. Fearless, talented, and ambitious, these women are shaping Detroit's future," the video's description says. It features a handful of young women explaining what it's like to live in the city. (It's awesome, of course.)
Don't let the video fool you into thinking being a female Detroiter is all sunshine and rainbows and nail polish. It's not. Sometimes the man who over-zealously offers to walk you through that dark alley to you car -- to, you know, keep you safe -- doesn't have your best interests at heart.

But the video does highlight one of the many identities that make up Detroit in a beautiful and inspirational way. I'm man enough to admit that the tween Detroiter at the end of this video made me tear up. It's advice that not just women, but all Detroiters should take to heart.
"Alrighty so. I like being a girl because I know that like, back then, like a bunch of people were like girls can't drive, they don't have good decisions so they can't vote or people say that, like girls can't do this and they're not good enough to do this and they can't work and they can't play certain games. And now, even though that is weighing away, I know that it's still there and me and other girls alike need to prove that we have a lot more potential than people see."
Somebody get this girl a gig with Kid President's people!
