Daniel Howes of the Detroit News reports an all-new Michigan Science Center is being created.

He says a prominent Ann Arbor business leader and former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, Ron Weiser, has reached an agreement to purchase the land, building and contents of the center from Citizens Bank, the mortgage holder owed $6.2 million.

The newly formed science center, to occupy the same space in the museum district along John R, would be a separate legal entity from the Detroit Science Center and would be governed by a largely new board of directors. New staff would be hired when the directors finish raising the necessary money to repay the debt held by Weiser — likely to be considerably less than the total debt held by Citizens — and to operate the center on a sustainable basis.
