When you're serving 28 years in prison for public corruption, you really have nothing to lose when it comes to appealing your conviction.

That seems to be the attitude of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

His attorney Harold Gurewitz told Tresa Baldas of the Detroit Free Press on Thursday morning that he plans to appeal Kilpatrick's conviction to the U.S. Supreme Court.

It's a long shot, to say the least. But it's certainly worth a shot.

Kilpatrick has had no luck on his appeals so far. In August, a three-judge panel in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Cincinnati upheld his conviction and rejected his appeal.

Kilpatrick then asked the entire bench of the Court of Appeals to hear his case. But that has been rejected.

"No judge has requested a vote on the suggestion for rehearing (by the full court)," the justices wrote, according to the Freep.  "Therefore, the petition is denied."

"There are really significant issues. It's a significant case. Mr. Kilpatrick received an extremely long sentence, so I think that there are compelling reasons for further review," Gurewitz told the Freep.
