Bernard Kilpatrick, who some privately blame for putting his son on the wrong path in politics, will be a free man today.
Heather Catallo of WXYZ reports that Kilpatrick, 73, has been in the Home Confinement program during the last leg of his 15-month sentence.
Sources tell the 7 Investigators that Kilpatrick has been staying with relatives in the Dallas. Last October, he transitioned from prison to a half-way house.
Kilpatrick was only convicted on tax charges. He had faced a serious public corruption charge of racketeering during trial with his son, but the jury deadlocked and didn't convict him of that.
Nonetheless, during sentencing in October 2013, U.S. District Judge Nancy G. Edmunds indicated that she thought he should have been convicted of the corruption charge and that he was lucky to have dodged that bullet that would have put him away in prison for a long time.
Kwame Kilpatrick is serving a 28-year sentence and his buddy Bobby Ferguson, a contractor with the city, is serving 21 years. -- Allan Lengel
