Pedestrians on the streets of Detroit's popular Greektown were evacuated Wednesday night after manhole covers exploded, WDIV reports. The Atheneum Suite Hotel was also entied.

Four explosions were heard about 9:30 p.m., WDIV reports. There were no injuries.

"A thick, heavy plume of smoke filled the air. We determined it was coming from underground," Detroit police Capt. Darin Szlagy tells Mara MacDonald of WDIV. Szlagy said it's unknown if it's a pressure issue or an electrical issue.

The Detroit Fire Department said a transformer blew near Fishbones in the 400 block of Monroe Street and manhole covers were blowing up randomly, causing safety concerns.

RoNeisha Mullen, spokeswoman for DTE Energy, tells the Detroit Free Press that utility officials suspect that an underground cable failed.

Rick Jeroski, who was on the eight floor of the Atheneum, tells WDIV: "The building shook a little."

Jeroski said he heard the explosions and saw smoke and fire coming from the street.
