Michigan has its first confirmed case of the Zika virus.

An Ingham County woman has contracted the disease, according to state health officials.

She woman contracted the virus while traveling in a country where the virus is being transmitted, according to a news release reported by Alexander Alusheff of the Lansing State Journal. The patient is not pregnant.

Zika spreads to people mainly through bites from infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are not native to Michigan.
