Far too often, Detroit residents have to trek to the burbs to shop for items like furniture.

This certainly isn't the end-all solution, but it's a start.

A new independently-owned furniture and home decor store, Urbanum,  that will sell one-of-a-kind antique finds along with current styles, is set to open in Midtown's New Center area in early spring, reports Georgea Kovanis of the Detroit Free Press.

The 1,800-square-feet is at 6545 Woodward, near W. Grand Boulevard.

"I've never been able to find bedding or a shower curtain. . . . You can get it at isolated shops, one or two things, but not a selection,'' ownere Brigid Beaubien says. "It frustrates me to not be able to buy something in the city limits where I live."

Kovanis writes:

The store's location in Midtown's New Center neighborhood is significant because it's a signal that more development may be creeping north from Downtown and to New Center. Apartment developments are under construction in New Center. The Fisher and Albert Kahn buildings are being renovated. The Detroit Pistons practice facility is set to be built.
