The New Center area, which is likely to become one of the next hot areas in Detroit, is getting a boost.
Adrienne Roberts of Crain's Detroit Business reports that a three-story building at 6568 Woodward Avenue at West Grand Boulevard, will undergo a renovation and house restaurants, residential units and a nonprofit, the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, which was founded in 2011 by owner of the Buffalo Bills.
Wilson, who lived in Grosse Pointe Shores, died in 2014 at 95, the same year he sold the team and directed the sales proceeds to go to the non-profit.
The foundation, which focuses on quality of life of the people residing in Southeastern Michigan and Western New York, will be moving from Grosse Pointe Farms.
Midtown Detroit Inc. plans to restore the tin ceiling in the commercial space and replace the exterior windows with historic replicas and vintage-style awnings, bringing the building back to its 1940's style, Roberts writes.
"This project is putting a vacant building back to use,"Melinda Clemons, a senior loan officer at Capital Impact Partners, which is financing the development, tells Crains. "(We believe this project) will be transformational and will spur new development in the area."
