The rebuild of Oakland Hills' clubhouse is expected to take years and cost tens of millions of dollars, if a similar rebuild in Redford Township is any indication.

The Western Golf & Country Club, which is about a third of the size of the famed 110,000 square-foot Bloomfield Township club that went up in flames Thursday, cost $15 million to reconstruct and took three years to reopen after a 2018 fire, The Detroit News reports. The club, like Oakland Hills, was founded about a century ago.

Already the metro Detroit country and golf club set have been offering to pitch in. While insurance money is expected to help cover much of the cost at Oakland Hills, it will also likely have to rely on additional support from its affluent members.

That's what happened in Redford Township:

Thousands of hours were put into rebuilding, but the club was able to lean on its members, representing a plethora of industries, despite challenges with supply chains and labor shortages. The new facility was able to be built to the liking of the membership with its interior still paying homage to the craftsman style of the original building.

An insurance claim covered most of the construction, though members did choose to provide additional funds to get the clubhouse they wanted, Iding said.

“Everybody came together once the grieving process ended,” Iding said of the group known as the “club of good fellowship.” “The club is extremely healthy at this time. It’s not something that is ever sought after, but at the end of this, we have ended up with a beautiful clubhouse.”

Oakland Hills' clubhouse was designed as by noted architect C. Howard Crane, a club member who also designed Orchestra Hall and the Fox Theatre in Detroit. The white-pillared structure was inspired by the George Washington homestead at Mount Vernon.
