Some folks in Windsor are having a hard time holding on to their bikes.
Derek Spalding of The Windsor Star writes that reported bike thefts in Windsor have jumped dramatically so far this year compared to 2013.
The Star reports that between March and July police received 226 bike theft reports, up from the 168 during the same time last year.
The Star reports:
The owners of City Cyclery bike shop in Walkerville have seen a noticeable increase in the number of people coming in to buy replacement bikes. Store co-owner Stephen Hargreaves said it seems like every day he’s talking to a new customer about a theft.
Police said at least a portion of the increase in the statistics could be attributed to the new crime reporting system that allows people to register thefts online. That theory may be true, but the first-hand accounts Hargreaves hears about indicate to him there is definitely a rise in the number of thefts.
