Wayne County has its first fatality in the nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak, health officials say.

The local victim is a 64-year-old woman who lived in an extended care and had received a tainted steroid injection linked to a Massachusetts pharmacy. Vials of the medication were shipped to at least four Michigan clinics..

The Michigan Department of Community Health reported the new deaths Tuesday. The other death was an 81-year-old Charlevoix County woman. That brings to eight the total number of Michigan residents who have died.

As of Tuesday, Michigan had 93 reported cases of illnesses linked to the steroid.
