A man is charged in the fatal shooting of an single father in Oxford Township in a bizarre incident over a text message, WDIV reports.
Dennis Kendrick, 54, who is raising his 15-year-old son, was killed Wednesday in his SUV in the Abbey Ridge Apartments parking lot around 3:30 a.m. as he was getting ready to go to work. His son, who is an athlete, attends Oxford High School.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, accused shooter Marcus Nathan, 36, received what he perceived as a threatening text message and tried to figure out who sent it. Nathan, who lived in the complex, walked up to Kendrick, who he did not know.
“He began walking around the complex and found this person in their car," Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, according to WDIV. Nathan decided Kendrick was responsible for the threatening text, even though he was not, police said.
Authorities allege that he shot the machinist multiple times with a 9-mm handgun from close range, then called 911, saying he'd been threatened in a text.
Nathan, who has a valid concealed pistol license, was arraigned Friday on charges of murder and firearm posession duringf a felony.
Visitation for Kendrick is set for Monday from 12-7 p.m.. Services begin 7 p.m. at Pixley Funeral Home in Auburn Hills.
