The family-owned Holiday Market on Main Street in Royal Oak, established in 1954, has a loyal following, and for good reason. It's one of the better supermarkets in Metro Detroit, offering a wide variety of items and prepared foods. It also caters parties and has a cooking school upstairs.

Now, it will spread to Birmingham.

Mark Kurlyandchik of the Detroit Free Press writes that the Violante family, which owns Holiday, ion Wednesday opens a 3,000-square-foot spin-off of the popular Holiday Market at 1740 West Maple Road in Birmingham with a focus on the prepared foods that have earned the market a loyal following. The store will be called "Holiday Market Select."

The store, located in the former Quarton Market, also will have meat, seafood, a deli, a small produce selection, plus beer, wine and liquor. But the main focus is on prepared foods and items designed to complement dinner.

"Our expectations are that this isn't the only place people will shop," says Tom Violante Jr., who's opening the maerket with his sister, Gina Mangold, and her husband Craig, the Freep reports.
