The city of Romulus appears to be swimming in a pool of chaos.
A week after the Michigan State Police detectives raided Mayor Alan Lambert's home, the city council voted unanimously Monday night for a resolution requesting that he resign, WXYZ reports.
Lambert, the focus of a public corruption probe, did not attend Monday's meeting. Public Works Director Thomas Wilson read a statement on his behalf, saying he was refusing to quit.
"Before you form your opinion, wait for the facts to come out," Lambert said in the statement.
That refusal has led to resignations of Police Chief Robert Dickerson and Economic Director Timothy Keyes, who quit last week and whose statements were read aloud at Monday's meeting.
"I can no longer work for the administration," Keyes wrote.
Lambert left his office on Monday with several boxes, WXYZ reports.
The station reports that Mayor Pro Tem Leroy Burcroff announced his candidacy for mayor on Monday, and was met with boos and applause when he mentioned it at the council meeting that was packed with citizens.
"We are going to continue to operate as professionals," said council member Eva Webb. "It would be in the best interest of this community if the mayor stepped down."
