Not so many years ago, this would have seemed like a fictional story.

Not now.

Tthe greater downtown Detroit area is running out of housing, John Gallagher and JC Reindl of the Detroit Free Press report. A dozen or more construction projects are under way will add more than 1,000 apartments this year, bringing more money, customers and growth.

The reporters write:

The new construction represents the latest wave in what promises to be a flood of new residential projects to downtown, Midtown, Corktown and other nearby areas. Multiple other projects are in various stages of planning for the next two to three years.

Barring a major economic downturn, the developments promise new residents with disposable incomes, boosting the fortunes of restaurants, clubs, and other entertainment venues. They are likely to swell attendance at Tigers, Lions and Red Wings games, Slow Roll bicycle rides, museums and the annual Thanksgiving Day parade, among many other venues and events.
