Rick Snyder and Kym Worthy agree that 11,300 untested rape evidence samples shouldn't continue to be neglected.

Gov. Rick Snyder: "This initiative will start us on the path to find justice."

The governor Wednesday proposed a way to move them from a Detroit warehouse to lab analysis, Kathleen Gray reports from Lansing for the Free Press.

The state may pump $4 million into a program to test thousands of rape kits that were left forgotten in a Detroit storage facility.

The 11,300 kits were found in 2009 in a Detroit police property storage room and represent evidence in thousands of rape investigations in the city dating back 25 years.

“Thousands of victims have been waiting too long for the justice they deserve,” said Gov. Rick Snyder at a news conference Wednesday where he was joined by Atty. Gen. Bill Schuette and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. “This initiative will start us on the path to find justice for these victims.”

Snyder will send legislators a supplemental budget proposal to bolster the State Police forensic lab with $4 million for the project. It provides crime lab services for Detroit, where the police stopped doing that work in 2009, Gray explains.
