Madison Heights police wrapped up a car theft investigation quickly and without an arrest -- just a reminder for drivers everywhere: "It’s never a good idea to leave your keys in your car.”
That tip from Lt. Robert Anderson is quoted by Oakland Press writer Michael P. McConnell is a dispatch about what he calls "a case of automotive mistaken identity."
Police say a 17-year-old from Dearborn went to pick up his older sister’s car for her outside a Madison Heights business and had been told the keys were on the floorboard, McConnell reports.
But the teen was driven to the wrong business next door by his father, got in a different car with the keys in the door pocket, and drove off.
His sister’s car is a black 1998 Ford Crown Victoria. The car he stole by mistake is a black 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis and looks very similar, police said.
Everything was straightened out about three yours later.
