Fiat might move its corporate headquarters to the U.S., and real estate sources have speculated that part of the Italian company's operatons might locate in Southeast Michigan.

The story by Crain's Detroit Business and Bloomberg notes:

CEO Sergio Marchionne is evaluating the switch from Turin, where Fiat was founded in 1899, to the United States as the carmaker's revenue and profit center shifts to North America, the sources said, asking not to be identified discussing the internal deliberations.

Real estate sources for Crain's Detroit Business have speculated that some part of Fiat's operations might move to the U.S., and possibly specifically to Auburn Hills, Troy or Detroit, because of Marchionne's dissatisfaction with the Italian government. Available land near Chrysler's headquarters or existing office space in Troy or Detroit are also possibilities, brokers say.

No final decision has been made.
