Gym-goers will have a half-dozen large new workout clubs in Detroit suburbs by next year, as Chad Halcom describes in a Crain's report on moves by the LA Fitness chain.

Construction is underway on sites expected to be ready this year in Troy, Clinton Township, Woodhaven and Sterling Heights, the article says. The California-based company also envisions 2014 openings in Grosse Pointe Farms and West Bloomfield.
"Right now the entire expansion strategy for Michigan is just focused in Metro Detroit. Hopefully one day they'll be moving into some other markets in the state, but that's not happening yet," said Anthony Schmitt, principal at Mid-America Real Estate Michigan, which is representing LA Fitness in all the local deals.
"And each one represents a significant local investment, since it's at least a 45,000-square-foot building most of the time."
LA Fitness already has a Metro Detroit presence after taking over 12 former Bally Total Fitness clubs here as part of a national acquisition, Halcom writes.
