April Anderson, a Chadsey High graduate who says she planned to be a baker since childhood, is preparing a second location of Good Cakes and Bakes.

She turned a home-based business into a storefront six years ago, opening at 19363 Livernois Ave. near the Sherwood Forest area. Now she and wife Michelle Anderson are months away from a New Center branch, Brenna Houck reports at Eater Detroit.

The bakery is setting up shop at 1415 Holden St. near Marble Bar and the Recycle Here! facilities, with plans to open this summer.

A large kitchen will let the owners offer baking classes and workshops. The site also will have a small retail counter and a few tables.

The entrepreneurs' growth is fueled partly by $200,000 in support won at the first Quicken Loans Detroit Demo Day for local start-ups in June 2017.

April Anderson graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta in 1996 with a business degree and added a master's of business administration from the University of Michigan two years later. She's also an alumna of the D:hive Detroit BUILD Program for entrepreneurs and the James Beard Foundation Chef Boot Camp.
