The city police department on Friday appointed its first female police chief in its 63-year history, Orlander Williams of the Detroit News reports.

The mayor picked Cmdr. Mary Sclabassi, an 18-year veteran of the force. She replaces Chief Dale Tamsen, who will retire on Oct. 28. 

"Mary is a proven leader and is well-prepared to lead our Police Department," Lamarand said Friday, according to the News. "Her commitment to the community and knowledge of the department will serve her well in the years to come."
