It looks even worse than originally thought.
Joel Kurth and Steve Pardo of The Detroit News report that construction of the new Wayne County Jail near Greektown could be suspended as soon as today after learning the project is more than $170 million over budget.
The News reports that the county now wonders if the project is too costly to continue. The state has talked about revamping an abandoned state prison on Mound Road so that it comes within budget.
Jail construction was originally budgeted for $220 million, and the county commission put a $300 million ceiling on it. The final cost is now pegged at $391 million.
County Executive Bob Ficano's aides reportedly will ask that work halt for 60 days while they evaluate the project, The News says.
