The Eastown Theater on Harper Avenue on Detroit's east side was once the hot music venue that attracted such acts in the late 1960s and early 1970s as the Who, the Kinks, Yes, Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, Steppenwolf, King Crimson, James Gang, Rush, J. Geils Band and Joe Walsh.
Before that, it was a classic movie theater. And in the end, it was taken over by a church before it was abandoned.
WXYZ 's Ronnie Dahl reports that the windows are gone, the doors have been stripped and a fire gutted part of the building in 2010." She says the theater has seen better days.
The station reports that the building is in such a state of disrepair, it has become dangerous. Scrappers stripped it. The roof is partially exposed and some want it razed.
WXYZ reported that a spokesperson for Mayor Mike Duggan's office says a crew will be out to fence it off and clear away debris from sidewalks. --A.L.
