Iggy Pop

Indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch is a big fan of the long-snubbed Michigan group,  Iggy and the Stooges.

In fact, in his new film on the group, "Gimme Danger," he comes out and calls the musicians the greatest rock ā€˜n’ roll band ever to roam the earth, reports Brian McCollum, the Detroit Free Press pop music critic.

The film opens Friday in several U.S. cities, including a run at the Detroit Film Theatre (DFT) at the Detroit Institute of Artss.

Ypsilanti native James Newell Osterberg, Jr., aka Iggy Pop, is now 69. In 2010, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

McCollum writes:

Jarmusch didn't need much convincing when Pop approached. Not only was the filmmaker a lifelong fan, but the Stooges had a compelling tale: Maligned in their early days, soon wiped out by drugs and bad luck, the band eventually became an influential rock touchstone and regrouped decades later for a triumphant return.
