The UAW is preparing an organizing campaign at a Nissan assembly plant where workers are starting production of the redesigned 2013 Altima.
The Altima is the company's best-selling car in the U.S., which gives the UAW some leverage. But the timing also carries risks for the union, which has failed in previous attempts to organize workers at Nissan's factory in Smyrna, Tenn.
This is the first organizing attempt at a non-Detroit Three assembly plant that the UAW has acknowledged since Bob King became president of the union in 2010; King has made organizing a central goal of his tenure.
"We are very much focused on getting what is a fantastic new midsize sedan launched," Nissan spokesman David Reuter told trhe Free Press. "The UAW's efforts are in no way going to derail the launch of Altima."
