Months after losing the battle to organize the VW plant in  Tennessee, outgoing United Auto Workers President Bob King told the union’s 36th Constitutional Convention the importance of organizing foreign automakers to ensure that auto jobs remain well paid, the Detroit News reported.

“We cannot win the justice for our members that they deserve,” if the union doesn’t negotiate with foreign competitors, King told about 1,100 delegates on the first day of the union’s four-day Constitutional Convention at Cobo Hall, according to the News. 

King thinks the union will win and organize the VW plant, the News reports.

“There’s many options under the law. We could wait a year for the NLRB. We could do a private election earlier than that,” King said in April, according to the News. “There’s a number of different options and we’ll explore all of them to see what we think is best for providing the representation.”
