Warren's police commissioner announced the death Monday of a hospitalized, profoundly obese woman removed from her squalid apartment last Tuesday by emergency crews in protective suits.
An autopsy is being conducted today, The Detroit News reports.
The woman, 41, shared an apartment with her husband and four children near 12 Mile and Gloede, according to authorities. Officials estimate she weighed 500 to 600 pounds.
Officers were summoned to the apartment by the woman's husband for medical assistance on Oct. 16, according to police.
The woman was confined to a hospital-type bed because of a medical condition, officials said. She was found lying in her own waste and covered with bedsores and maggots.
Investigators believe she was on some kind of state assistance and may have lost it, according to a preliminary investigation.
Rescue workers who removed her from the bed and the apartment last week had to put on Hazmat suits and gear to extricate her.
