
Police say a Dearborn officer fatally shot a theft suspect Wednesday afternoon after a chase ended on Detroit's west side.
A man wanted by Redford Township police was spotted by a Dearborn officer, according to WDIV.
A chase followed and led the officer and suspect to a back yard in the 8000 block of Whitcomb Avenue. Police said there was a struggle over a gun until the officer gained control of it and shot the suspect.
Police have not specified whether the gun belonged to the suspect or the officer, according to the station.
Whitcomb is off Tireman, three blocks east of Greenfield Road.
Update, 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, 6:35 p.m. : The off-duty officer spotted the 34-year-old man suspected of larceny several days ago, Candice Williams and Tom Greenwood report at The Detroit News.at
The officer tried to stop the suspect, who then ran. According to a source, the officer and suspect got into a wrestling match before the suspect broke free and ran again. The officer caught up and used pepper spray.
The suspect then reportedly tried to grab the officer’s weapon, at which point he was shot, the unnamed source tells The News.
Other media identify the victim as Kevin Matthews of Detroit, reportedly a probation violator.
