McDaddy's: No living things died to make this meal

Bummer news for vegans who retain a fondness for American fast food: Street Beet, the two-woman team who brought plant-based versions of Taco Bell, KFC and McDonald's menu items to spots around town, are closing for good.

Meghan Shaw and Nina Paletta made the announcement on Street Beet's social media channels Wednesday.

We know deep down that this is the right thing to do, and as individuals we are ready for the next chapter in our lives. When we first started out in 2018, we never imagined we would create something so impactful. We simply loved to cook vegan food, had fun when we teamed up, and decided to share it with the world around us. You all have allowed us to do that and so much more over the last 4 years.

Deadline Detroit wrote about the pair when Street Beet was doing pop-ups at PJ's Lager House and Nancy Whiskey. At the time, Shaw said she wanted to make the sort of food that tempted her to fall off the vegan wagon when she was making the transition to a plant-based diet, as well as something extra:

“Vegans are known for not being any fun at all,” she said. “I was reading about some rapper who doesn’t want to identify as vegan, because ‘vegans are like the police,’ he said. “We’re just trying to make it a little more fun.”

More recently, Street Beet has had a semi-permanent residency at Third Street Bar & Grill in Midtown, and occasional pop-ups at other spots. From the closing announcement:

To our loyal customers, you have completely changed our lives. We used to feel lucky when a few friends stopped by to eat. Now we have fed thousands of you, many who show up every single week. Knowing that our food made you happy is the greatest accomplishment of all.

Those customers have a few more opportunities to eat Street Beet fare at Third Street:

Our final 2 weeks of business will take place February 9th-13th & 16th-20th. We look forward to seeing everyone's faces and going out with a bang.
