On Friday night in the seventh inning, Nationals manager Matt Williams came to the mound to see if ex-Tiger Max Scherzer wanted to stay in the game and pitch to Miami's Dee Gordon with two outs and the score tied 2-2.
James Schmel of MLive reports that Scherzer responded by shouting:
"I want it. I (expletive) want it. I (expletive) want it."
Williams quickly retreated back to the dugout.
MLive reports:
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus wasn't the least bit surprised by Max Scherzer's fiery response to a question from Washington manager Matt Williams.
Ausmus witnessed it first-hand last season.
"That's just Max," Ausmus said Saturday. "Max has done that with me, too."
Williams told reporters:
"I asked him, 'You want him (Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon)?' He said, 'Yeah.' Among other things. I don't know if you can read lips," Williams told reporters.
And yes, Scherzer got the batter out and the Nationals won 5-4.
