Mike Wallace speaks to City Council President Carl Levin.
As this 1976 report by Mike Wallace of "60 Minutes" shows, the narrative for Detroit has changed. No one called it a Comeback City back then.
Wallace came here to show the negative impact the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, (HUD) had on Detroit. He reported that government loans for homes and HUD lead prompted then-President of the City Council Carl Levin to refer to the agency as "Hell Upon Detroit."
Wallace reported on corruption and mismanagement of the HUD program that resulted in thousands of Detroit homeowners defaulting on their homes and leaving them in the hands of the government. As we know, Carl Levin went on to become the U.S. Senator from Michigan. Wallace died in 2012 at age 93.
