Dashcam video captured a car spinning out of control and hitting another car and a Bloomfield Township police officer on I-75 near Adams Road on Saturday. The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The department posted the video and information about the incident on its Facebook page.
The police said a Bloomfield Township police officer had stopped on the left shoulder of northbound I-75 near Adams Rd. with emergency lights on and got out of his car to assist a motorist that had slid off the road onto the median.
Police said an 18-year-old motorist lost control and struck the officer's patrol car and then the disabled vehicle.
"The officer, narrowly avoided being crushed between the vehicles, was struck and thrown into the ditch," police said. " As a result of the crash, the officer was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The officer was later released and is at home recovering.
“First, I am thankful that our officer is recovering and going to be ok. This is a stark reminder of just how dangerous our job is.” Chief Geof Gaudard. said in a statement. “It is imperative that drivers understand that during inclement weather, they need to slow down and maintain control of their vehicle. By slowing down, they can react to situations in front of them, like a patrol car with emergency lights on. Crashes like this are preventable, if drivers are attentive and understand their abilities and the abilities of their vehicles during bad weather.”
