Michigan doesn't have an established cougar population.

So that's what makes the video all the more rare.

Candice Williams of the Detroit News reports that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources released video footage Thursday of a male cougar at a deer kill site in Mackinac County in the U.P.

Since 2008, there have been 28 confirmed sightings of cougars in the Upper Peninsula.

"What's interesting about this video is it's the best footage we've ever come across from a citizen," Debbie Munson Badini, spokeswoman for the DNR said, according to the News report. "It's a neat thing for the public to see. People appreciate being able to see the wild being wild."

The News writes that hunters captured the video in December on a trail cam.
