German automaker Volkswagen pleaded guilty Friday in Detroit to three federal charges in connection with a scandal that involved equipping cars with software designed to fool federal emissions tests for years.

But U.S. District Judge Cox said he wanted more time to review the terms of the settlement agreement, which proposes a $4.3 billion fine --far less than what the company could be fined under federal sentencing guidelines, writes Brent Snavely of the Detroit Free Press.

"With all due respect...this is a very, very serious offense," Cox said, saying he wanted more time to consider objections filed on behalf of some customers.
