Wayne County Executive Warren Evans' wife has resigned from her county job following a report by WXYZ raising questions about nepotism.
Evans' wife, Renata Seals-Evans, was hired for a $60,000 a year county position despite a lack of government experience or a college degree, Ross Jones reported. Six months after that, she was promoted to a full-time position that paid $70,000 plus benefits.
Her job was to educate residents and help them avoid foreclosures of their homes.
The TV story triggers criticism in the county. On Tuesday, Seals-Evans issued this statement:
It is with my sincerest regret that I submit this letter of resignation. After analyzing the effect that my employment (due to my marriage) has on the county as whole, there is only one choice to be made. The mere appearance of being unethical, is not acceptable to me and my standard of living. If we are truly for the people and by the people, then it is important that we are respectful of the wishes of the people.
