Republican Attorney General Bill Schuette, a likely candidate for governor, and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer did what President Donald Trump has refused to do: release their taxes.
Schuette and his wife earned $375,466 in 2016 while Whitmer earned $150,499, according to federal tax returns first shared with Jonathan Oosting of The Detroit News. Schuette releases his returns each year. Whitmer did so at the request of the Detroit News, which asked all statewide candidates this week to do so.

Schuette and his wife, a homemaker, paid paid $45,740 in federal taxes for 2016. Whitmer, a former state Senate minority leader, filed separately from her husband, a dentist, and paid $27,949 in federal taxes, the News reports. She was the Ingham County Prosecutor in 2016, having stepped in temporarily after Stuart Dunnings III resigned after pleading guilty to 15 prostitution-related crimes.
