A residents' group, New Era Detroit, is patrolling a west-side neighborhood Detroit on foot and by car, much like the long-established New York group Guardian Angels.

Volunteers patrol around Wyoming and Fullerton for nine hours on weekdays, targeting school areas before and after the bell and late at night, WXYZ's Aaron Baskerville reports. They hope to expand eventually.

"We can't just talk about it all the time. We need to do something and we need to be consistent," a member identified as Zeek says.

The group hopes to enlist about 500 men.
