Jail is not a place to spend those senior years.

West Bloomfield Township grandma Sandra Layne, 74, who is at stage in her life where she should be worried about catching a bus to the community center for a game of Rummique, is instead deteriorating in jail, her attorney said in pretrial conference in Oakland County Circuit Court on Thursday, Detroit News reporter Mike Martindale reports.

Layne, who is charged with fatally shooting her grandson Jonathan Hoffman, 17, is scheduled to go to trial on trial Mach 4. He was shot four times. She has been in jail for about six months.

"It's pretty clear jail is wearing on her — she loved him and is devastated by this," said her attorney, Jerome Sabbota, according to the Detroit News. "She became mother and father to him. … She got herself into a bad situation (caring for the grandson).

"He was not, let's say, the all-American boy. He had issues."
