A man is in police custody after setting his 45-year-old girlfriend on fire early Friday morning on Detroit's east side, the Detroit News reports. She remains in critical condition.

Tom Greenwood of the Detroit News reports that the incident occurred at about 2 a.m. at a home in the 3600 block of Canton, near East Grand Boulevard and Mack.

“They had an argument and he doused her with gasoline and set her on fire,” Detroit Fire Department Arson Chief Charles Simms said, according to the News. “Some bedding, the floor and carpeting also caught fire. She was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital where she is in critical condition and on a ventilator.”
