An 89-year-old World War II vet who was busted near Chelsea two years ago for hauling 228 pounds of cocaine cocaine for a Mexican drug ring has reached a deal with the feds that could prevent him from going to prison.

Robert Snell of the Detroit News reports that Leo Earl Sharp has agreed to pay the government $500,000 and surrender Florida property. But he'll get to keep his home and farm where he grows 168 registered varieties of daylilies.

He's set to be sentenced next Wednesday on his 90th birthday, the News reports. It's possible he'll get a break and avoid prision under the deal.

Snell reports that Sharp pleaded guilty late last year for hauling the cocaine along I-94, east of Chelsea. A drug sniffing dog discovered the dope in the bed of his pickup.  -- A.L.
